Egypt became the fourth African nation to register a victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating New Zealand 3-1 in their second Group G match.
The Pharaohs recovered from an early setback to claim all three points at BC Place in Vancouver, thanks to goals from Mostafa Ziko, Mohamed Salah and Trezeguet.
The result followed Egypt’s 1-1 draw with Belgium in their opening fixture and moved them into a strong position in the group.
Prior to Egypt’s triumph, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Morocco were the only African teams to have secured wins at the tournament.
Ivory Coast opened Africa’s winning account with a 1-0 victory over Ecuador, while Ghana defeated Panama by the same scoreline. Morocco also recorded a 1-0 win against Scotland in Group C.
Meanwhile, Senegal, Cape Verde, DR Congo, Algeria, South Africa and Tunisia are still searching for their first victories of the competition.
