The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed allegations that its operatives assaulted staff of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), while confirming that an internal investigation has been launched into the incident.
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale said the agency is yet to find any evidence supporting claims of physical assault on hospital staff during the visit. He explained that operatives from the Uyo Zonal Directorate were at the hospital on Tuesday for purely administrative duties, specifically to authenticate a document, and not for an arrest operation.
According to him, no arrests were made during the visit, and no hospital staff were detained or taken into custody. Oyewale said the commission is concerned about the allegations but insists that no medical or physical evidence of injury has been presented so far.
He added that the EFCC has ordered a full investigation into the matter to establish the facts and ensure accountability where necessary. The spokesperson also noted that any officer found to have acted outside the agency’s standard operating procedures would face appropriate disciplinary action.
EFCC further urged the public to disregard misleading reports, stressing that the incident should not be used to undermine the agency’s anti-corruption mandate. The commission reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, respect for human rights, and carrying out its duties without abuse of authority.
