Adewale Adeniyi urges collaboration with diplomatic missions and security agencies as NCS expands international cooperation frameworks across 20 countries…..
The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has called for deeper collaboration between customs administrations, diplomatic missions and security agencies to strengthen trade facilitation, improve border security and enhance revenue generation.
Adeniyi made the appeal during a diplomatic engagement hosted by the NCS in Abuja, which brought together ambassadors, high commissioners, heads of mission and senior government officials, including representatives of key security agencies.
According to a statement issued on Friday, the meeting served as a platform to reinforce institutional ties and explore new areas of cooperation in customs administration and international trade.
Speaking at the event, the Customs chief emphasised that evolving global trade dynamics require stronger partnerships among nations and institutions to effectively manage border operations and emerging security challenges.
“We recognise and appreciate your contributions to strengthening diplomatic and trade relations. The Service remains committed to providing the support and services required for diplomatic missions to operate effectively in Nigeria,” he said.
Expanding International Cooperation
Adeniyi noted that the NCS has continued to deepen its engagement with customs authorities across the world through structured partnerships, knowledge exchange programmes and capacity-building initiatives.
According to him, the Service currently maintains cooperation frameworks with more than 20 customs administrations globally, reflecting its commitment to aligning with international best practices.
He explained that such partnerships are increasingly important in a global trading system that is becoming more interconnected and complex, requiring coordinated responses to shared challenges.
Focus on Trade Facilitation and Border Security
The Customs boss said sustained engagement between customs agencies, diplomatic missions and security institutions is essential to improving border management systems, facilitating legitimate trade and boosting Nigeria’s economic competitiveness.
He added that platforms such as diplomatic receptions provide valuable opportunities for dialogue, trust-building and the exploration of new areas of collaboration.
“The modern customs environment requires shared responsibility and sustained collaboration among international partners to effectively address emerging trade and security challenges,” Adeniyi said.
Security Agencies Present at Engagement
The event was attended by members of the Customs management team as well as top security officials, including the Chief of Air Staff and the Inspector-General of Police, alongside other senior government representatives.
Participants at the meeting commended the Nigeria Customs Service for fostering stronger institutional relationships and promoting international cooperation aimed at improving trade efficiency and border governance.
Officials said the engagement reflects ongoing efforts by the NCS to modernise its operations, strengthen global partnerships and position Nigeria as a more competitive player in international trade.
