The suspension and trial of a serving commissioner have been cited by Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, as evidence of his administration’s commitment to accountability.
Oborevwori spoke on Tuesday when he received the newly posted General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force South-South, Operation Delta Safe, Major General Everest Ifeanyi Okoro, at the Government House in Asaba.
The governor said his administration would not shield officials accused of wrongdoing, stressing that public office does not place anyone above the law.
“We have stated that whether you are a government appointee, whether you are part of the system, if you commit an offence, the law must take its course”, he said.
Oborevwori said the government allowed the police to investigate the allegation against Commissioner for Works, Highways and Urban Roads, Rueben Rume Izeze, before his arrest and arraignment.
He also attributed the relative peace in Delta to sustained cooperation between the state government and security agencies, describing stability as essential for investment and development.
“As a state, we have always shown support and collaborated with all security agencies and security commanders. Because the peace we are enjoying today is the collaboration between the state and the security agencies”, he said.
The governor assured the new Army commander of continued support and urged him to adopt proactive measures to strengthen security across the state.
He cited the construction of 31 housing units at the Amphibious Army Barracks in Agbor and logistical support for 63 Brigade as part of the government’s contribution to security operations.
Oborevwori expressed confidence that stronger collaboration with the military and other security agencies would help sustain peace and create a safer environment for residents, businesses and investors.
