Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy has become the African artist with the highest number of monthly listeners in Spotify history, setting a new continental record on the streaming platform.
The Afrobeats star, born Damini Ogulu, recently reached 46.84 million monthly listeners, eclipsing the previous African record of 46.58 million held by South African singer Tyla.
His audience on Spotify has continued to grow, with the platform now showing approximately 47.3 million monthly listeners, putting him on course to become the first African artist to surpass the 50 million monthly listener milestone.
The increase in streaming numbers has been driven largely by “Dai Dai,” his collaboration with Shakira, which has enjoyed strong global traction.
The track recently climbed to the top of Spotify’s Global Top Songs chart, making Burna Boy the first African artist to reach No. 1 on the chart.
The achievement also marks a significant milestone for African music on the platform. The last time an African artist occupied the summit was in 2016, when Wizkid topped the chart through his feature on One Dance by Drake.
Burna Boy’s latest streaming milestone adds to a growing list of global achievements, further cementing his position as one of Africa’s most influential and commercially successful music stars.
