Veteran Nollywood actress Bukky Wright has spoken against the criticism often directed at women with financial expectations in relationships, arguing that they should not be shamed for wanting financially stable partners.
Speaking during a recent appearance on The Moraya Show, the actress challenged the use of the term “gold digger” to describe women who seek partners capable of meeting their financial expectations.
According to Wright, there is nothing wrong with women setting high standards when choosing a partner. She encouraged young women not to lower their expectations, insisting they should not feel guilty about seeking financial security in relationships.
She also advised men to pursue relationships that align with their financial capacity rather than criticising women whose expectations exceed what they can provide.
“I hate it when I hear men calling women gold diggers. What do you expect her to dig before? I won’t advise any woman to dig anything less than gold,” she said.
The actress further maintained that men who cannot meet a woman’s expectations should instead seek partners whose lifestyles and demands match their income.
“If you cannot afford a woman, don’t go for it. Go for the one you can afford,” Wright stated.
Reflecting on her younger years, the actress recalled that many women of her generation avoided dating men of the same age because they believed such relationships offered limited financial prospects.
She added that relationships often become difficult when there is a significant gap between a woman’s lifestyle and a man’s financial ability, stressing that people should “cut their clothes according to their materials” when choosing a partner.
