Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma has proposed a five-year renewal system for marriages, arguing that periodic reviews could encourage greater accountability and healthier relationships between spouses.
Speaking during an appearance on the Dear Ife podcast, Bovi said couples should have structured opportunities to evaluate their marriages and openly discuss unresolved issues before they become more serious.
He explained that knowing a review is approaching could motivate partners to be more intentional about their behaviour and commitment throughout the relationship.
According to the comedian, the idea is particularly suited to African societies, where marriage often extends beyond two individuals and involves the participation of both families.
Bovi suggested that at the end of every five-year period, the couple and their families could come together to discuss the state of the marriage and determine whether both partners still wish to continue the union.
He stressed that the proposal is not meant to promote divorce but rather to create a formal process for reaffirming commitment and addressing concerns in a constructive manner.
“Expiry is a very powerful word, but I think every marriage should be renewed, for example, every five years,” he said.
He added that when spouses know a review is on the horizon, they may be more willing to make positive adjustments and work through challenges before they escalate.
