Former APC National Deputy Legal Adviser, Bolaji Edun, has warned that the All Progressives Congress (APC) could lose the 2027 governorship election in Kwara State if the party continues with what he described as the imposition of a preferred candidate.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE News, Edun said the APC in Kwara State is facing serious internal challenges that have left many party members dissatisfied.
“The APC political house in Kwara State is in disarray and dysfunctional,” he said.
According to Edun, tensions within the party stem from the alleged decision by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to back a preferred governorship aspirant ahead of other contenders.
“The governor himself decided to impose a candidate,” he stated.
He stated that several other aspirants possess stronger political credentials and greater experience than the candidate allegedly being promoted by the party leadership.
“We have very highly respected aspirants that are well qualified,” he said.
Edun maintained that denying aspirants a level playing field undermines democratic principles and weakens the party’s chances at the polls.
“We should have a freer electoral process that would produce the best candidate,” he stated.
According to him, the people of Kwara are becoming more politically aware and are closely observing developments within the APC.
“People are no longer dozed off politically,” he said.
He warned that continuing the current approach could create further divisions within the party and strengthen the opposition ahead of the next election cycle.
“If you continue with this process as it is, I’m afraid APC will lose Kwara State,” he stated.
Edun said opposition parties are already mobilising and positioning themselves to take advantage of any internal crisis within the APC.
“The opposition is on the ground,” he said.
He further emphasized that the party should learn from previous political experiences and avoid actions that could alienate loyal members and supporters.
“That is no longer democracy. That is inviting anarchy for the party in 2027,” he stated.
Edun concluded that the APC’s prospects in the 2027 Kwara governorship election depend largely on ensuring a transparent and competitive selection process, warning that alleged candidate imposition and internal divisions could undermine the party’s chances of retaining power in the state.
