American rapper Azealia Banks has triggered widespread criticism after making controversial remarks about Nigerians and their attitude toward Black Americans.
In posts shared on her X (formerly Twitter) account, the rapper alleged that Nigerians are “cold-hearted” and tend to push away Black Americans. She also claimed that she does not wish to identify as Nigerian, linking her comments to what she described as personal experiences and perceptions.
Banks further contrasted Nigeria with Ghana, stating that she found Ghanaians more welcoming toward members of the African diaspora. She also expressed pride in what she described as her Ghanaian heritage.
Her comments quickly sparked backlash from Nigerian users on social media, many of whom accused her of generalising and promoting stereotypes about the country and its people.
Despite the criticism, the rapper maintained her position online, continuing to respond to users and doubling down on her remarks, which further fueled the ongoing debate across social media platforms.
The exchange has since generated wider discussion around identity, diaspora relations, and perceptions within African and African-American communities.
