Ayra Starr has shared insights into how her creative process has evolved since her debut, saying she now prioritises experimentation with sound over writing based on emotion.
Speaking on the Creatorium Podcast, the Mavin Records artiste explained that her current approach to making music is less about waiting for inspiration and more about actively trying out ideas in the studio.
She noted that her songwriting process now often begins with experimenting, whether through chords, sampling, or exploring unusual sounds, rather than starting from a specific emotional experience.
According to her, the goal is often to create something fresh or unconventional, allowing the idea to develop naturally during production.
“I don’t start with emotion anymore. I just start by trying things, and then we see where it goes,” she explained.
Ayra Starr contrasted this with her debut album, which she said was heavily influenced by emotional themes and a more traditional songwriting structure.
She explained that her earlier work leaned more toward expressing sadness and personal feelings, while her current direction focuses on sonic exploration and creative freedom.
The singer also recalled how one of her early tracks, Beggie Beggie, was written spontaneously during a bus ride.
She said the song was inspired by a moment she overheard while travelling, which sparked the idea for its title and concept.
Beyond her creative process, Ayra Starr also spoke about the demands of a music career, stressing that success in the industry requires discipline, passion, and resilience.
She noted that while performances may appear glamorous, the reality involves extensive preparation and behind-the-scenes challenges, including technical issues that can affect live shows even after weeks of rehearsal.
