Grammy-nominated singer Ayra Starr has opened up about why she chose not to date while in high school, saying the decision was intentional and guided by a desire to protect her personal image.
The 23-year-old Mavin Records artiste shared the insight during a recent interview with Quenlin Blackwell, where she reflected on her teenage years and approach to relationships.
Ayra Starr explained that she was cautious about romantic attention at the time and often questioned the intentions of those who showed interest in her.
According to her, avoiding relationships in school helped her steer clear of being defined by breakups or past romantic ties.
“Because I didn’t want to be someone’s ex, I didn’t date in high school,” she said. “I knew a lot of guys were trying, and I was like, ‘Why are you trying? That means you must have an ulterior motive.’”
She added that she remained highly aware of how she was perceived and preferred to focus on herself rather than engage in teenage relationships.
The singer also spoke briefly about her current perspective on relationships, noting that her priorities have shifted over time. She said she now places greater value on intelligence and character in a partner than on physical appearance.
Ayra Starr, one of the leading voices in contemporary Afrobeats, continues to gain international recognition for her music while also drawing attention for her candid views on personal growth and relationships.
