Popular Nigerian health influencer Aproko Doctor has issued a strong warning against the consumption of spoiled tomatoes and other fungus-contaminated foods commonly found in local markets.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Egemba cautioned Nigerians about the dangers of eating rotting tomatoes, locally referred to as Ata Esha or Awarawa, noting that such produce often contains harmful fungal growth.
He explained that the white patches sometimes seen inside spoiled tomatoes are caused by fungi that produce aflatoxins — toxic compounds associated with serious health risks.
“This tomato, commonly called spoiled tomatoes (Ata Esha) or awarawa… there’s a poison inside this tomato that a lot of you don’t know about, but you’re eating it every day,” he said.
Egemba added that aflatoxins have been linked to liver cancer in adults and can also cause stunted growth and developmental issues in children.
“These white things inside the tomato is caused by a fungus that produces a toxin known as aflatoxin… aflatoxin has been shown to actually cause liver cancer in adults. If you give it to children, it can cause stunted growth as well as other things,” he stated.
The health educator further warned that the risk is not limited to tomatoes, noting that foods such as corn, onions, groundnuts, and grains can also become contaminated when stored in damp or poorly ventilated conditions.
He also noted that such contaminated produce is often sold at cheaper prices in markets, which can tempt buyers despite the health risks involved.
“You might think you are saving money by eating this type of tomato, but you are actually risking your life,” he added.
Egemba advised consumers to prioritise fresh produce and store food in dry, cool conditions to reduce the risk of contamination.
He also warned that removing visibly rotten sections does not eliminate the danger, as toxins may already have spread throughout the food.
