A human rights organisation, Nigerians Unite Against Terror, has called on Nigerians to remain alert and provide timely and credible information to security authorities whenever suspicious activities are observed as terrorists continue to be on the prowl in the country.
The organisation called on Nigerians to remain united as “the enemies of our nation seek to divide us along ethnic, religious, and regional lines”, adding that “they thrive on suspicion, hatred, and disunity.”
Citing the recent successes recorded by the Nigerian secret police in intercepting the activities of terrorists, prosecuting suspects, and securing convictions through lawful judicial processes, the organisation saluted the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) for their dedication and professionalism in confronting security threats across the country.
The Convener of #Nigerians Unite Against Terror, Austin Usman Okai, at a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday said the commitment of the DSS to operating within the framework of the rule of law reinforces public confidence in the democratic institutions and demonstrates that justice can be pursued effectively without compromising constitutional principles.
He said, “We stand here as one people, bound together by a common destiny and united by an unwavering commitment to the peace, security, and prosperity of our beloved country. We raise our voices in solidarity and declare unequivocally that terrorism shall neither define our nation nor determine our future.
“The forces of violence and extremism have inflicted immeasurable pain on countless families, disrupted communities, and challenged our collective sense of security. Yet, despite these difficulties, the spirit of Nigeria remains unbroken.
“Today, we honour the memories of every innocent man, woman, and child whose life has been cut short by acts of terror. We stand in heartfelt solidarity with survivors who continue to bear the physical and emotional scars of conflict. Their courage inspires us, and their resilience strengthens our resolve to ensure that peace triumphs over fear.
“As citizens, we must recognise that the responsibility for safeguarding our nation does not rest solely on the shoulders of government and security agencies. Security is a collective duty. It requires the vigilance, cooperation, and active participation of every Nigerian.
“Through the #UnitedAgainstTerror Campaign, we call upon citizens across all communities, wards, and local government areas to become active partners in our national security efforts. We urge every Nigerian to remain alert and to provide timely and credible information to security authorities whenever suspicious activities are observed.
£In the fight against terrorism, intelligence remains one of the most powerful weapons. A single report can prevent an attack, save lives, and protect entire communities.
“We must therefore foster greater trust and collaboration between citizens and security agencies. Together, we can create a formidable national network that denies terrorists the space, support, and secrecy they seek to exploit.
“Justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done. We therefore encourage the DSS to sustain this commendable momentum and continue strengthening public trust through transparency, professionalism, and accountability.
“We equally extend our profound appreciation to the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force, and local vigilante groups whose bravery and sacrifices continue to protect our communities. Day after day, these courageous men and women place themselves in harm’s way, including paying the supreme price,,to defend our nation and preserve the lives of ordinary citizens.
“We commend the military for successful rescue operations that have reunited kidnapped victims with their loved ones and acknowledge the growing synergy amongst our security agencies. The collaboration between formal security institutions and local vigilante groups, whose knowledge of the terrain provides invaluable operational advantages, has yielded encouraging results and deserves continued support.
“However, while we celebrate these achievements, we must remain clear-eyed and laser- focused. The fight against terrorism is far from over. We call upon military commanders, security chiefs, and political leaders at all levels to intensify efforts, strengthen intelligence gathering, enhance operational coordination, and ensure that every part of Nigeria remains secure and free from the menace of violent extremism.
“A threat to a church in the South is a threat to a mosque in the North. A threat to a community in the East is a threat to a village in the West. An attack on any Nigerian is an attack on all Nigerians.
“Let us therefore stand united under the banner of #UnitedAgainstTerror. We call on Nigerians at home and abroad, on social media platforms, in marketplaces, places of worship, schools, offices, and communities, to amplify this message of peace, solidarity, resilience, and national unity.
“Together, we shall reclaim our peace. Together, we shall secure our future. Together, we shall build a safer and stronger Nigeria for generations yet unborn.
