The Vice-Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has urged opposition parties in Nigeria to unite ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that continued division among opposition forces could strengthen the chances of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) retaining power.
Amaechi made the call while receiving a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, during a condolence visit following the death of his mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Amaechi.
The former Rivers State governor stressed that opposition parties must move beyond individual interests and political differences by building a broad-based alliance capable of presenting a strong challenge at the polls.
He argued that cooperation among opposition groups remained critical to preventing the APC from maintaining its grip on power, urging political leaders to continue discussions aimed at finding common ground before the next election cycle.
Amaechi said the interests of Nigerians should remain the priority, adding that opposition parties must focus on addressing the concerns of citizens rather than allowing personal ambitions and internal disagreements to undermine their collective strength.
He cautioned that a fragmented opposition could provide an advantage to the ruling party, making it easier for the APC to secure electoral victory in 2027.
Reflecting on the loss of his mother, Amaechi described Dame Mary Amaechi as a pillar of support whose sacrifices and dedication played a significant role in shaping his life and that of his siblings.
The Turaki-led PDP faction expressed condolences to the Amaechi family, describing the death as a painful loss.
In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, IniEmemobong, the group acknowledged the former minister’s long-standing contributions to the PDP, where he served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and later became governor of the state.
The delegation encouraged Amaechi and his family to remain strong, noting the enduring impact of his mother’s life and legacy.
The meeting combined expressions of sympathy with renewed political conversations ahead of the 2027 election season, as opposition parties continue efforts to define their strategies and alliances.
