The Federal Government has approved the recruitment process for 3,252 verified Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) teachers into the federal public service, a move aimed at addressing teacher shortages and improving the quality of education in Federal Unity Colleges.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, who disclosed this on Thursday, described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval as a major intervention that demonstrates the administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s education sector and investing in the country’s future.
According to the minister, priority will be given to verified PTA teachers who have served in Federal Unity Colleges and Federal Technical Colleges, some for nearly 25 years, allowing them to transition into the mainstream public service.
“This is a President who cares deeply for Nigeria and for the future of our country,” Alausa said, noting that the approval would not only address longstanding teacher shortages but also recognise the dedication of thousands of educators who have supported learning over the years.
He described the development as a significant milestone under the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying the recruitment would improve teacher-student ratios in Federal Unity Colleges while rewarding experienced teachers who had continued to serve despite years of uncertainty.
The minister explained that the approval followed a comprehensive verification exercise conducted by an inter-ministerial committee, which screened PTA teachers across the Federal Unity Colleges.
The exercise verified 3,252 eligible teachers in the cadres of Education Officers, Assistant Education Officers and Technical Instructors for regularisation, subject to the completion of statutory requirements.
Alausa said the integration of the experienced teachers into the federal workforce would preserve institutional knowledge, strengthen classroom instruction and improve learning outcomes across the colleges.
He added that the recruitment forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to improve teacher quality and reposition Federal Unity Colleges as centres of academic excellence.
The minister said the Federal Ministry of Education would continue working with relevant government agencies to conclude the remaining statutory procedures required for the issuance of final recruitment approvals in line with public service regulations.
He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the recruitment process, describing the decision as another demonstration of the administration’s resolve to place education at the centre of national development.
According to him, investing in teachers remains fundamental to building a stronger education system because no education system can rise above the quality of its teachers.
Alausa assured the verified PTA teachers that the regularisation process would be concluded with transparency, fairness and due diligence in accordance with established public service rules.
He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to implementing policies that strengthen the teaching profession, improve learning outcomes and ensure that students in Federal Unity Colleges receive quality education from qualified and motivated teachers.
