Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has highlighted the mental toughness of his Atletico Madrid teammates after they successfully navigated a tense encounter to knock Barcelona out of the UEFA Champions League. Although the Madrid side suffered a 2-1 loss during Tuesday’s second-leg match at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Lookman’s individual contribution proved to be the aggregate tie-breaker. His clinical finish, combined with the 2-0 advantage secured at the Nou Camp the previous week, ensured a 3-2 total victory for Diego Simeone’s men.
Reflecting on the shifting momentum of the match during a post-game interview, the versatile attacker described the tactical battle as a contest defined by endurance. He noted how the squad managed to recalibrate their focus during high-pressure intervals, allowing them to capitalize on the few offensive opportunities that came their way.
“Game of two halves, really. We stuck in and dug in and went through to the semis,” Lookman told TNT Sports. “As the game is going on, you’re playing and moments happen in the game. The pause lets you switch back into gear and we were able to create a few chances.”
Lookman further elaborated on the team’s ability to maintain their strategy throughout a difficult second period, emphasizing that once the goal was scored, the primary objective was to sustain that level of performance to cross the finish line.
“We got the goal and we were able to continue in that way in the second half,” he added.
Having successfully eliminated one of Europe’s heavyweights, Atletico Madrid now sets its sights on a semi-final showdown. Their path to the final will go through either London or Lisbon, as they prepare to face the winner of the quarter-final clash between Arsenal and Sporting CP. For Lookman, the achievement cements his growing influence in European football as he continues to be a central figure in Atletico’s quest for continental silverware.
