Security forces have launched intensified operations in Plateau State following a deadly ambush on security personnel, with troops of Sector 6 under Operation Enduring Peace arresting 19 suspects in Tongoron, Riyom Local Government Area.
The arrests were carried out on Tuesday during a clearance operation in the community after a joint security patrol along the Ganawuri-Sabon Gida Road was attacked. Intelligence sources said the suspects, made up of 14 members of the community and five Fulani residents, were taken into custody for profiling and further investigation.
The operation followed an attack on security operatives who had mounted a snap roadblock along the route before coming under fire. Two personnel who failed to return after the incident were later found dead, with reports identifying them as a police inspector and a lance corporal of the Nigerian Air Force. T
heir service rifles were also reportedly taken by the attackers.
Security agencies have since commenced wider cordon-and-search operations across neighbouring communities to track down the perpetrators, recover stolen weapons and prevent further attacks.
Military authorities said the arrested suspects are being screened to establish any possible links to the ambush or other criminal activities in Riyom, as efforts continue to restore security in the affected areas.
