Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has named former Super Eagles captain Jay-Jay Okocha as the greatest footballer of all time, opting out of the long-running debate between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Speaking during a recent interview with ESPN, the Afrobeats star said his admiration for Nigerian football legends influenced his choice.
Asked to identify the greatest player in football history, Burna Boy placed Okocha at the top of his list, with Brazilian legend Pelé also earning a mention.
“I will say Jay Jay Okocha. It is between him and Pele. I am not doing that Ronaldo or Messi stuff,” he said.
The singer also shared other football favourites during the interview. He described Harry Kane as his favourite striker of all time and reaffirmed his support for Manchester United.
Looking at the next generation of talent, Burna Boy selected Lamine Yamal as the best young player in world football, praising the Barcelona teenager’s performances.
He also identified Kobbie Mainoo as his favourite current Manchester United player.
Burna Boy’s comments add his voice to one of football’s most enduring debates, with the singer choosing to celebrate Nigerian and African football heritage rather than weigh in on the rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo.
