Families of 176 residents abducted by terrorists in Kwara State say they are losing hope of securing their release after alleged negotiations with the kidnappers failed despite efforts to raise over ₦155 million.
The relatives of the victims said the prolonged captivity has created growing fears for the safety of their loved ones, accusing authorities of not doing enough to bring the ordeal to an end. In a video appeal, community representatives said residents contributed personal savings, sold valuables and mobilised funds in an attempt to meet the demands of the abductors, but the money was allegedly rejected. ]
Abdul Ibrahim, who spoke on behalf of the affected communities, said the situation had become more desperate following alleged threats by the kidnappers to harm some of the captives and force female victims into marriage.
He said communities had exhausted several options, including protests and direct engagement with the abductors, but none had resulted in the release of the victims. Ibrahim appealed to the Federal Government, Kwara State Government and security agencies to intervene, warning that only decisive action could secure the freedom of those still in captivity.
Meanwhile, the Dan Sardaukin Kaiama, Suleiman Bukata, called on security forces to intensify efforts to rescue the victims, saying the successful recovery of abductees in neighbouring Oyo State had renewed hope that a similar operation could be carried out in Kwara.
He urged authorities not to abandon affected communities, stressing that residents deserve the same attention given to victims of similar attacks elsewhere.
The abductees were taken on February 3 after armed assailants attacked Woro and neighbouring Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, an incident that left several people dead and many others displaced.
