Chelsea are close to completing the signing of Brighton striker Danny Welbeck after the veteran forward received approval to undergo a medical at Stamford Bridge.
The 35-year-old is expected to join the Blues on a two-year contract and link up with the squad during their pre-season tour in Hong Kong next week.
Welbeck’s proposed arrival aligns with new head coach Xabi Alonso’s plan to add more experience to a Chelsea squad that has featured the Premier League’s youngest team over the last two seasons.
The club’s lack of senior players has been identified as one of the reasons behind inconsistent performances, including a 10th-place league finish and a trophyless campaign last season.
Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali previously admitted that the club’s recruitment approach needed a “tweak,” with the team now prioritising the addition of more established players.
