Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala has apologised to Nigerian fans following the team’s disappointing 3-2 loss to Malawi in their opening match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The defending champions suffered a shock defeat against the Scorchers, with Temwa Chawinga scoring twice and Tabitha Chawinga adding another goal for Malawi. Nigeria’s goals came from captain Rasheedat Ajibade and substitute Uchenna Kanu.
Speaking after the match, Oshoala expressed regret over the result and appealed for patience from supporters.
“We are sorry for losing the opening game to Malawi,” Oshoala told reporters after the pulsating encounter.
The former Barcelona striker described the defeat as a wake-up call, insisting that the team must improve ahead of their next fixture.
“Smaller nations are closing the gap, but it’s also a wake-up call for Nigeria. We have to understand that other teams want to win this trophy as well,” she added.
“It’s still a long competition, and all we need to do is prepare well for the next game.”
The Super Falcons will face the Copper Queens of Zambia in their next Group C match on Saturday.
