Super Falcons midfielder Christy Ucheibe says Nigeria is determined to bounce back from their opening defeat at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and secure qualification from the group stage.
Ucheibe made the statement after Nigeria’s 3-2 loss to Malawi in their Group C encounter, assuring fans that the team will give its best in the next match against Zambia.
“I’m going to say it’s football. Nothing went wrong; both teams played very well, and that’s just football for you. You lose, you win, or you draw. But either way, you bounce back,” Ucheibe told Victor Ademola.
“In the next game against Zambia, we will try our best to get through this phase so we can qualify for the World Cup and defend our title.”
Malawi secured one of the biggest surprises in WAFCON history by defeating the record champions, with Temwa Chawinga and Tabitha Chawinga scoring three second-half goals for the Scorchers.
Nigeria’s comeback attempt saw Rasheedat Ajibade convert from the penalty spot before Uchenna Kanu added a late goal, but the Super Falcons could not avoid defeat.
The result leaves Nigeria third in Group C with no points and a negative goal difference, as they prepare to face Zambia on Saturday.
