Nigeria’s boxing campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games has suffered another setback after Ajishola Kadijat was eliminated in the women’s 54kg round of 16.
The 19-year-old narrowly lost 3-2 on split decision to Wales’ Helen Jones in a closely fought contest at the SEC Centre in Glasgow, bringing an end to her medal hopes.
Kadijat’s defeat marks the fourth exit for Nigeria’s boxing team after Ayomide Foly Hassan, Abdulramon Abdulwahab and David Akintola also bowed out earlier in the competition.
Hassan suffered a 4-0 points defeat to Lesotho’s Refiloe Thai in the men’s 70kg round of 32, while Akintola lost 4-1 to Tanzania’s Yusef Lucasi Changalewa in the men’s 80kg category.
With four members of Nigeria’s six-athlete boxing squad now out, attention turns to the remaining fighters as the country seeks to revive its medal hopes.
Patricia Mbata will face England’s Mary Smith in the women’s 75kg quarter-final on Tuesday, July 28, while Blessing Orakwe takes on Australia’s Lekeisha Pergoliti in the women’s 70kg quarter-final on Wednesday, July 29.
