The legal challenge to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s emergence as the African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate has come to an end after a Federal High Court in Abuja struck out a suit filed by former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik dismissed the case after Amaechi’s counsel, Jibrin Okutepa, applied to withdraw the suit, informing the court that parties had settled their differences.
The case, which had Atiku, the ADC and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as defendants, was filed shortly after Atiku emerged as the party’s candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
Amaechi had challenged the validity of the May 25 primary election, alleging violations of the Electoral Act, the ADC constitution and the party’s guidelines for conducting primaries.
He had sought orders stopping Atiku from presenting himself as the ADC presidential candidate and preventing INEC from recognising him.
With the withdrawal of the suit, the court brought the matter to a close, removing a legal hurdle surrounding Atiku’s candidacy ahead of the 2027 elections.
