Nigerian Afrobeats star Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has become the first African artiste to reach the summit of the Billboard Global 200 Songs chart.
The Grammy Award-winning singer achieved the milestone with “Dai Dai,” his collaboration with Colombian pop star Shakira for the FIFA World Cup, which climbed to No. 1 on this week’s Billboard Global 200 rankings.
The song also secured the top position on the Billboard Global 200 Excluding U.S. chart, marking another major international achievement for the Nigerian singer.
In the United States, “Dai Dai” continued its upward trajectory on the Billboard Hot 100, rising 12 places to a new peak of No. 55.
Another Nigerian star, Tems, also recorded a notable chart milestone this week.
Her single “What You Need” climbed five spots to reach a new peak of No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 after spending 15 weeks on the chart.
The song recently reached No. 1 on both the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart and the Mediabase Urban Radio Airplay chart, further extending Tems’ growing list of international achievements.
With those accomplishments, Tems remains the first solo African artiste to top both the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart and the Mediabase Urban Radio Airplay chart, reinforcing her influence on the global music scene.
Burna Boy’s latest achievement adds another landmark to the growing global recognition of Afrobeats, highlighting the increasing international success of African artistes on some of the world’s biggest music charts.
