Concerns over the safety of schools in Kogi State have resurfaced after gunmen abducted the principal of Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, a NECO ad-hoc official and four students during an ongoing examination in Dekina Local Government Area.
The Kogi State Police Command confirmed that the attack occurred at about 5:25 p.m. on Tuesday while candidates were writing their National Examinations Council papers.
Police spokesperson, Salisu Oyiza, said the attackers took away the principal, four students and one NECO official.
“During the incident, four students, the school principal and one NECO ad hoc staff member were abducted by the attackers”, she said.
She added that a joint security team had commenced search-and-rescue operations, with one of the abducted students already rescued while efforts continued to secure the release of the remaining victims and apprehend the attackers.
Oyiza said the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Naziru Kankarofi, the Commander of the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army and the state Security Adviser were visiting the community for an on-the-spot assessment.
The incident comes days after nine mourners, including two Federal Road Safety Corps officials, were kidnapped along the Ochadamu-Ejule Road in Ofu Local Government Area.
