Media personality Toke Makinwa has stirred discussion on social media after suggesting that many Nigerian men depend more on financial provision than emotional connection in their relationships.
Speaking on a recent episode of the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Makinwa argued that some men believe money is their strongest asset in attracting and keeping a partner, often paying less attention to communication and emotional intimacy.
According to her, this mindset has contributed to the perception that Nigerian women are excessively materialistic. She said many women have come to place a high value on financial benefits because that is what they are repeatedly offered in relationships.
Makinwa maintained that some men are quick to express interest through monetary gestures instead of taking time to build genuine connections or understand the women they pursue.
She said her personal experiences have shown that some men assume generosity alone is enough to sustain a relationship, adding that they often offer money before investing in meaningful conversations or getting to know a potential partner.
The actress argued that this pattern has reinforced a culture where financial expectations have become commonplace in modern dating.
Her comments have since sparked mixed reactions online. While some social media users agreed that emotional intelligence is frequently overlooked in relationships, others criticised the remarks, saying they unfairly generalised Nigerian men.
