The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has vowed that security agencies will clamp down on those behind the rising wave of violence in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election. Disu made the pledge on Friday during a visit to Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Government House in Osogbo, where he expressed concern over recent killings, clashes and political tension in the state.
He said police had been monitoring the situation for months and would not tolerate violence linked to the election, insisting that offenders would be tracked and prosecuted.
The IGP noted that a deputy inspector-general had earlier been deployed to engage stakeholders and prevent further escalation. He also directed the state commissioner of police to intensify action against identified groups involved in violence, warning that political violence would not be condoned.
Disu urged parents to caution their children against being used as political thugs, warning that involvement in violence could destroy their future. He further called for improved performance from the state police command, reiterating that senior officers overseeing the area had been instructed to step up security operations.
Responding, Governor Adeleke commended the visit and urged the police to prosecute anyone involved in killings, regardless of political affiliation, saying no one should be shielded from justice.
The visit comes amid rising political tension and reported killings linked to party rivalry ahead of the governorship election.
