The death toll from the collapse of a three-storey building at Alakija Bus Stop in the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State has risen to nine following the recovery of another body from the rubble.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said 27 persons were rescued alive during a coordinated search and rescue operation involving emergency responders and community members.
LASEMA confirmed that rescue operations have now been concluded, while the remains of the deceased have been handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for identification and other necessary procedures.
Authorities have also commenced investigations to determine the cause of the collapse.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has announced plans to demolish all distressed buildings in the Alakija area following the incident.
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said the collapsed structure had earlier been marked for demolition and occupants were directed to vacate the premises but failed to comply.
He added that all buildings found to be structurally distressed or located under high-tension power lines would be removed to prevent future tragedies.
