Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has clarified why Cristiano Ronaldo remained on the pitch for more than an hour during his side’s 2-1 friendly victory over Nigeria despite struggling to convert his chances.
The veteran forward endured a frustrating night in front of goal before being substituted for Gonçalo Ramos in the 65th minute of the match in Leiria on Wednesday.
Martinez said Ronaldo’s playing time was part of a pre-arranged fitness and rotation plan designed for several members of the squad.
“Diogo Costa had a 90-minute plan, Cristiano 60.
“Nuno Mendes was going to have 30 and 45 minutes for Vitinha and João Neves. I am very pleased with the attitude and focus of all the players.
“Being able to have the idea of making changes to the team and showing synchronization is a source of pride.”
The 41-year-old will be aiming for a sharper display when Portugal begin their World Cup campaign against DR Congo next Wednesday.
