Nigerian singer and former member of the now-defunct P-Square group, Peter Okoye, has said the responsibility of addressing Nigeria’s challenges should not rest solely on celebrities.
The music star made the remarks while responding to growing calls for public figures to speak out more forcefully against issues such as poor governance, insecurity and the country’s economic difficulties.
Speaking during an interview with Wazobia FM in Lagos, Mr P stressed that meaningful change would require the collective efforts of all Nigerians rather than a few influential voices.
The singer acknowledged previously distancing himself from discussions about the country’s problems and expressed regret over that stance. He noted that while some public figures may have access to security protection, many ordinary Nigerians do not enjoy the same privilege.
According to him, the nation’s future depends on the actions of its citizens working together to demand improvements and hold leaders accountable.
Mr P also argued that criticism directed solely at celebrities misses the broader issue, insisting that national challenges affect everyone regardless of status.
While expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, the singer maintained that lasting solutions would come through collective action rather than relying on entertainers and other public figures to champion the cause alone.
His comments add to the ongoing debate about the role celebrities should play in shaping public discourse and advocating for social and political change in Nigeria.
