Facility eyes ambitious expansion to 1.4 million bpd as it strengthens Nigeria’s push for energy independence…..
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has recorded a significant operational milestone, increasing its crude oil processing volume to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), exceeding its original installed capacity of 650,000 bpd.
The achievement marks a major step forward for the refinery, which has rapidly emerged as a key player in Africa’s energy landscape since commencing operations.
According to the company, the new processing level was attained during a performance assessment carried out by its technical process licensors, demonstrating the refinery’s ability to optimize production beyond its designed throughput.
The development highlights the facility’s growing operational efficiency and capacity to handle additional crude feedstock while maintaining stable performance across its processing units.
Speaking on the refinery’s growth trajectory, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, disclosed that the company is targeting an even more ambitious expansion in the coming months.
He said plans are underway to increase the refinery’s capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day within the next 30 months, a move that could transform the facility into one of the largest refining complexes in the world.
According to Edwin, the expansion strategy extends beyond meeting Nigeria’s domestic fuel needs. It is designed to position the country as a major refining and export hub capable of serving markets across Africa and beyond.
The refinery’s increased output is also expected to support Nigeria’s long-standing goal of reducing dependence on imported petroleum products, improving energy security and strengthening foreign exchange earnings through exports.
Industry observers believe the planned scale-up could have far-reaching implications for the economy, including increased industrial activity, new employment opportunities and stronger value chains within the oil and gas sector.
The latest milestone comes months after the refinery’s Chief Executive Officer, David Bird, expressed confidence in the plant’s ability to ramp up production above its nameplate capacity.
Bird had noted that the facility possessed sufficient feedstock supply, operational capacity and fuel inventory to comfortably satisfy market demand. He also revealed that the refinery is capable of producing more than 75 million litres of petrol daily, emphasizing that future efforts would focus on maximizing output and operational efficiency.
The refinery’s long-term expansion vision was first outlined by Dangote Group founder Aliko Dangote, who announced plans to double processing capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day within a three-year timeframe.
If achieved, the expansion would further cement the refinery’s status as one of the most influential energy infrastructure projects in Africa and could significantly reshape fuel supply dynamics across the continent.
With production now surpassing its original design benchmark, the Dangote Refinery appears to be moving steadily toward its goal of becoming a global refining powerhouse while playing a central role in Nigeria’s energy transformation agenda.
