Plans under discussion for a proposed United States currency redesign are attracting attention after reports that a portrait resembling President Donald Trump could appear on a future bill.
According to the Washington Post, the draft design includes Trump’s image alongside the inscription “America 250 anniversary,” marking the United States’ upcoming 250th independence anniversary in 2026.
The report said the proposal was developed after two Trump-appointed officials at the U.S. Treasury Department encouraged staff at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to produce prototype designs. However, staff members reportedly raised concerns, citing a federal law that prohibits the depiction of living presidents on U.S. currency.
The director of the printing bureau, Patricia Solimene, was said to have warned officials about legal and procedural issues before being reassigned, according to the report.
Despite these concerns, the Treasury Department is reportedly continuing preliminary planning and review of the proposal. The idea is part of broader efforts linked to the United States’ upcoming 250th independence anniversary, with officials exploring commemorative currency and coin designs.
A separate commemorative gold coin marking the anniversary was previously approved by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. The proposal has also drawn criticism from some lawmakers, who argue it risks politicizing U.S. currency and promoting a cult of personality around the president.
