New sanctions have been announced targeting Iran over its control and fee collection system for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The US Treasury said the measures focus on Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority, which it accuses of charging vessels passing through the strategic waterway. Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, said the action is aimed at cutting off funding linked to Iran’s military and sanctioned groups, warning that companies paying the fees could also face sanctions.
U.S. officials say the sanctions are part of broader efforts to block revenue they believe supports Iran’s weapons programs and allied organizations.
Iran, however, maintains that the charges are for “navigational services” and fall under its regulatory authority over the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route, which handles about 20 percent of global oil and gas shipments.
Tensions remain high despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, with friction continuing over maritime control and regional security.
