Growing insecurity in parts of Sokoto East Senatorial District has pushed Senator Ibrahim Lamido to abandon plans for another term in the National Assembly and instead pursue the governorship seat in the state.
Speaking with journalists, Lamido said the office of a senator lacks the executive powers needed to effectively address the security challenges affecting communities in his constituency.
He explained that many residents had urged him to seek executive office, insisting that only a governor has the operational control and resources required to restore stability in troubled areas.
Lamido, who contested for the governorship ticket of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 elections, however lost the party’s consensus arrangement to former Deputy Governor Mannir Dan’iya.
Despite the outcome, the lawmaker pledged to remain in the ADC and support the party’s candidate, stressing that politics should be driven by service to the people rather than personal ambition.
