Journalists from the Nation Media Group covering demonstrations against high fuel prices along Thika Road were attacked and robbed by dozens of thugs who surrounded the vehicle they were travelling in.
The attackers, who had erected barricades along the highway, demanded “toll fees” from the team from NTV and the Daily Nation before they could be allowed to pass.
The crew were on their way back to Nation Centre in the City after covering events in Ruiru and Juja towns when they were attacked on the Ruiru Bypass.
The gang stormed the road, surrounded the vehicle and pelted it with stones before robbing the crew of two media identification vests and a helmet. The attackers also stole camera accessories and a camera bag.
This happened just a few meters from police officers who were attempting to disperse the crowd. Some of the attackers were captured on camera.
The NMG crew included NTV reporter Labaan Shaaban, NTV videographer Luis Ngari, Daily Nation reporter Kevin Cheruiyot, Daily Nation photographer Evans Habil, and driver Bernard Mochama.
The incident was reported at Gatongora Police Station. The situation along Thika Road remains volatile as gangs terrorise motorists.
