Following the attack in Ahoro-Esinle, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, education authorities have confirmed the killing of a teacher and the abduction of several pupils. The attack reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday when armed men stormed the schools and carried out the abductions before fleeing.
The state police command says the Commissioner of Police is leading coordinated response efforts, with further details expected after preliminary assessments.
The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board says the incident affected LA School and Community Grammar School in the community, prompting the immediate closure of schools in the area and neighbouring local government areas, including Surulere, Oyo East, Oriire and Olorunsogo.
Security agencies are still working to determine the exact number of abducted pupils as search and rescue operations continue in the affected communities.
Tactical teams have been deployed to the area, with authorities saying efforts are ongoing to rescue the victims and secure the region. Officials described the development as a major setback for the education sector and urged residents to remain calm while investigations continue.
The board said the closure of schools was a precautionary measure aimed at preventing further attacks and allowing security forces to stabilise the situation.
