Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan will aim for a third African women’s 100m hurdles crown as the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships begin today at the University of Ghana in Accra.
The world record holder and five-time national champion heads into the competition with an outstanding history at the continental event, where she has claimed five gold medals in both individual and relay races.
Amusan secured the 100m hurdles and 4x100m relay titles at Asaba 2018 before repeating the double at Mauritius 2022. She later added another relay gold medal at Douala 2024.
Although she was tipped to pursue another hurdles title in Douala, Amusan skipped the individual event for personal reasons and competed only in the relay.
Liberia’s Ebony Morrison enters the championships as the defending women’s 100m hurdles champion after setting a championship record of 12.7 seconds ahead of Marione Fourie and Sidonie Fiadanantsoa.
Despite Amusan’s strong position as favourite, fellow Nigerians Adaobi Tabugbo and Janet Sunday are also expected to compete strongly for honours. Tabugbo finished fifth in the 100m hurdles at Douala 2024 and was part of the relay team that won gold alongside Amusan.
