Uganda’s government staged a night-time drone light show over the capital on the eve of President Yoweri Museveni’s inauguration, with illuminated formations depicting the veteran leader’s face and messages thanking voters for their support.
Video shared by the national broadcaster showed dozens of synchronized drones lighting up the night sky on Monday (May 11), forming images including a portrait of Museveni and a sign reading “Thank you for trusting us,” as crowds looked on. The display came hours before Museveni was due to be sworn in for another term in office.
Museveni, in power since 1986, secured victory in elections earlier this year that extended his decades-long rule. The vote was declared free and fair by electoral authorities, while opposition figures and some rights groups raised concerns over campaign restrictions, arrests of critics and limits on media and public gatherings.
The election took place amid a heavy security presence, with the government saying measures were necessary to maintain stability. Museveni’s main challengers rejected the outcome, alleging irregularities, claims the government has repeatedly denied.
Supporters of the president say his leadership has brought relative stability and economic progress to Uganda, while critics argue the long tenure has narrowed political space.
The inauguration ceremonies, including the drone display, were presented by authorities as a celebration of continuity and public trust, as Museveni begins another term facing economic pressures and calls for political reform.
