The Iranian football federation has affirmed that its men’s national squad will compete in the 2026 World Cup, though it has coupled this commitment with specific demands for the North American hosts. This declaration follows a diplomatic rift last month when Canada denied entry to the federation’s president ahead of the FIFA Congress, citing his affiliations with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Concerns regarding Iran’s involvement in the summer tournament had intensified following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East this February.
With the competition set to run from June 11 to July 19, Tehran is now insisting that the United States, Mexico, and Canada address its logistical and political requirements. Despite the regional volatility and previous visa denials, the federation remains steadfast in its intent to take the global stage.
“We will definitely participate in the 2026 World Cup, but the hosts must take our concerns into account,” the Iranian federation said on its official website.
