Botswana has lost one of its most prominent leaders with the death of former President Festus Mogae, who died on Friday at the age of 86.
Mogae, born on August 21, 1939, served as the country’s third president between 1998 and 2008 and is widely regarded as one of Botswana’s most influential post-independence leaders.
His administration is credited with strengthening economic governance and ensuring stability during a period of significant diamond-driven growth. He is also remembered for his efforts in tackling the HIV/AIDS epidemic, introducing policies that helped expand access to treatment and reduce its impact nationwide.
Before becoming president, he held key positions in government, including finance minister and vice-president, building a long career in public service.
President Duma Boko, announcing his death, described Mogae as “a distinguished statesman and patriot whose life was devoted to the service of his country.”
Reports had earlier indicated that the former president was receiving medical care in Gaborone, though officials did not disclose the nature of his illness.
