The South West Coordinator of the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Movement, Dr. Adefolaseye Adebayo, has claimed that about 10 million Nigerians registered with the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) within 24 hours of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi joining the party.
Adebayo made the claim during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, following recent political developments involving Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, who both reportedly left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the NDC ahead of the next general elections.
The development has sparked debate within political circles, with some observers suggesting that Obi’s prospects in future elections may be affected by the move.
However, Adebayo dismissed such claims, insisting that Obi retains strong nationwide support that cuts across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
According to her, the former Labour Party presidential candidate’s influence is driven more by personal appeal and perceived capability than party affiliation.
“Mr Peter Obi has a lot of followership across Nigeria. You can’t say that Obi’s chances or the chance of the South East reduced drastically,” she said.
She further claimed that the scale of early registrations into the NDC reflects Obi’s political influence, stating, “24 hours after Peter Obi left ADC, 10 million Nigerians registered with NDC and that says a lot.”
