Following a deadly assault in Adamawa State, northeast Nigeria, Amnesty International has called for stronger protection of civilians, saying a Boko Haram attack in the state highlights worsening insecurity in the region.
In a statement on Monday, the organisation said the attack occurred on Sunday in Guyaku and Telabala communities in Gombi Local Government Area, leaving at least 29 people dead and residents searching for missing relatives who fled during the assault.
According to the rights group, attackers shot residents at close range and set fire to churches, classrooms, and motorcycles. Survivors and witnesses said bodies were found scattered across the villages, while elderly residents who could not escape were killed inside their homes.
The group also raised concerns over the continued abduction of women and girls, as well as widespread looting of property during such attacks.
Amnesty International urged authorities to take urgent steps to protect civilians, stressing the need for accountability, justice, and reparations for victims and their families.
