In the wake of renewed protests targeting foreign nationals, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged compliance with local laws and respect for national traditions.
He made the remarks during a Freedom Day address aired on SABC News, amid rising tensions and reports of anti-foreigner sentiments in parts of the country.
“To those who are here legally, respect us as South Africans, respect our laws, respect our conventions and our traditions, as you would want us to respect the laws and traditions of your own country”, he said.
Ramaphosa stressed that while South Africa remains committed to international cooperation, human rights, and multilateralism, it will also enforce its immigration laws where necessary. He urged that cases involving undocumented migrants be handled through legal processes.
“So we then therefore say, yes, let us allow our laws to take their course. We have already set in place the way in which we will be able to deal with those who are in our country illegally”, he stated.
He also emphasised the importance of international law in maintaining global order, noting that it remains a priority.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) said ongoing diplomatic engagements aim to ensure the safety and protection of Nigerian nationals while preventing further escalation of tensions.
It added that Nigerian and South African authorities are maintaining communication to address concerns and respond swiftly to any incidents involving foreign residents.
NiDCOM also urged Nigerians in South Africa to register with the Nigerian Consulate where necessary and stay in contact with community leaders for updates and support.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as calls grow for calm and restraint from all parties involved.
