Embassy urges stricter compliance with immigration rules, says violations by a few may impact chances for many…
The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a fresh warning to Nigerian travelers, cautioning that visa overstays and fraudulent practices could have far-reaching consequences not just for offenders, but for future applicants as well.
In a statement shared on Monday via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Mission stressed the importance of adhering strictly to U.S. immigration laws, noting that non-compliance continues to raise concerns among authorities.
According to the advisory, Nigerians who overstay their visas risk more than personal penalties. Such actions, it said, contribute to a broader pattern that could make it harder for other citizens to secure visas in the future.
“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the statement read. “Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”
Beyond overstays, the Mission also highlighted visa fraud and misuse of travel documents as serious issues under close watch. Applicants were urged to be truthful in their submissions and to respect the terms of their visas throughout their stay in the United States.
In a notable move, the Mission called on members of the public to actively support efforts to maintain the integrity of the visa process. Individuals with credible information about fraudulent activities were encouraged to report directly to consular fraud prevention units via dedicated email channels in Abuja and Lagos.
The warning comes amid ongoing efforts by U.S. authorities to ensure that those who comply with immigration rules are not disadvantaged by the actions of a few. The Mission reaffirmed its commitment to fostering safe, lawful, and orderly travel between Nigeria and the United States, while making it clear that accountability remains a top priority.
As scrutiny around visa applications intensifies, the message is unmistakable: playing by the rules is no longer just advisable it’s essential.
