The 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards is set to hold on May 9, 2026, with premium tequila brand Don Julio confirmed as the headline sponsor.
This year’s edition introduces a stronger emphasis on craftsmanship, shifting attention to the creative professionals working behind the scenes in African cinema. Writers, directors, editors, designers, and technicians will receive increased recognition for their contributions to the industry.
Organisers say the 2026 theme aligns with Don Julio’s “por amor” philosophy, which celebrates passion, dedication, and artistry—values reflected in filmmaking.
In the lead-up to the awards, the brand hosted a special edition of The Don’s Table, an event designed to honour Nollywood actors and filmmakers who have demonstrated long-term commitment to their craft. The initiative highlights Don Julio’s growing involvement in supporting African storytelling.
As the official spirits partner, the brand is expected to play a key role in shaping the event experience. Plans include curated drink offerings, signature toast moments, and integrated brand activations aimed at enhancing the overall atmosphere of the ceremony.
Notably, this marks the first time a luxury spirits brand has taken on the role of headline sponsor for the AMVCA. Other brands, including Johnnie Walker and The Singleton, will also support the event.
According to Segun Ogunleye, Head of Marketing for Africa Partner Markets at Diageo, the partnership reflects a shared commitment to celebrating excellence, creativity, and cultural pride.
The 2026 ceremony will feature 32 award categories, including 18 decided by a jury, 11 determined by public voting, and three special honours recognising lifetime achievement and emerging talent.
With its renewed focus and expanded partnerships, this year’s AMVCA is expected to further spotlight the depth and diversity of Africa’s film industry.
