A U.S. lawmaker, Kimberly Daniels, has weighed in on Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, calling on President Bola Tinubu to consider the removal or redeployment of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.
Daniels, who also chairs the United World Congress of Diplomats, made the call in a statement posted on her Facebook page on Wednesday, outlining recommendations to address rising insecurity across the country.
The Florida representative urged the Nigerian government to “look inward” and remove individuals allegedly compromising national security. Among her key recommendations was an immediate leadership review, including the removal or redeployment of Matawalle to restore confidence in the defence ministry.
Daniels also called for a transparent investigation into allegations of high-level complicity in banditry, alongside stronger security measures to protect vulnerable communities in the North-Central and North-West regions.
Addressing the United States government, she advocated increased diplomatic pressure to ensure accountability for individuals accused of aiding terrorism.
Citing findings from a referenced report, Daniels alleged that attacks against religious groups in Northern Nigeria may be enabled by internal actors, describing such threats as “homegrown” and deeply damaging to public trust.
