A viral video circulating on social media claiming a terrorist attack in Abuja has been dismissed by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command as fake and manipulated.
In a statement posted on its official X handle on Thursday, the Command said there was no security breach anywhere within the FCT and urged residents to disregard the content.
The statement read, “The viral video alleging a terrorist attack in Abuja is FALSE and MISLEADING.
“There is no security breach anywhere in the FCT. Findings show the gunshots were edited and superimposed on unrelated footage”.
The debunked clip, which spread widely online, falsely claimed that “gunshots are raining heavily in the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria as Fulani Islamic terrorists shoot and try hard to take over Abuja”, sparking concern among residents before it was officially discredited.
The Police Public Relations Unit said the Commissioner of Police has ordered a forensic investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for producing and circulating the video, describing it as a deliberate attempt to incite panic and disrupt public peace.
Authorities also warned that spreading false information capable of causing public fear is a punishable offence, adding that those involved in the creation or amplification of such content will be prosecuted once identified.
The Command urged residents to rely only on verified official channels for security updates and to avoid sharing unverified content, stressing that misinformation can undermine public safety and security operations.
Police reassured residents that the FCT remains calm and secure, with security agencies continuing to monitor the situation closely.
