A viral video involving Senator Francis Fadahunsi has triggered calls for police investigation ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
The campaign council of Governor Ademola Adeleke is asking the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to investigate the senator’s remarks, which it described as inciting. Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, was reportedly speaking to APC supporters in Ilesa when he allegedly urged them to attack members of the Accord Party.
The video, recorded in Yoruba, has attracted reactions from members of the public, with some calling on the police to intervene. Adeleke campaign council spokesperson Pelumi Olajengbesi described the remarks as a threat to lives and the peaceful conduct of the election.
However, Fadahunsi has rejected the interpretation of his comments, saying they were political and metaphorical. He explained that his remarks were intended to urge voters to reject the Accord Party overwhelmingly through lawful and peaceful means at the polls.
With the election days away, the controversy has added to calls for political actors and their supporters to avoid statements or actions that could heighten tension and threaten the peaceful conduct of the poll.
