Esther Okereke has emerged as the presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) for the 2027 general election after clinching the party’s ticket at its presidential primary convention held in Abuja.
Her emergence followed a successful screening process conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines.
In her acceptance speech, Okereke said her decision to join the NRM was driven by her conviction that the party has the capacity and vision to pull Nigeria back from what she described as the brink of institutional collapse.
She pledged to galvanise Nigerian youths, promote ethical leadership and pursue far-reaching structural reforms that would reposition the country for sustainable growth and development if elected president in 2027.
Speaking at the convention, the National Chairman of the party, Chinedu Obi, called on delegates to put national interest above personal ambition, stressing that Nigeria’s future rests on credible leadership and responsible governance.
Obi lamented the worsening state of insecurity, poverty, unemployment and economic hardship across the country, while expressing sympathy for victims of terrorism, kidnapping, banditry and communal violence.
According to him, despite Nigeria’s vast human and natural resources, millions of citizens continue to face hardship as a result of years of poor leadership and weak governance.
He said the party’s “Blueprint for a Rescued Nigeria” is anchored on 24 policy pillars designed to restore security, revive the economy, improve education and healthcare, empower women and youths, and strengthen democratic institutions.
“National Rescue Movement stands prepared to provide the visionary, competent, accountable, and transformational leadership necessary to make it happen. Together, we shall rescue Nigeria. Together, we shall rebuild Nigeria. Together, we shall restore hope and secure the future,” he said.
Obi also commended members of the party’s National Management Committee and state chapters for their commitment to the growth of the NRM, while applauding aspirants who participated in the screening exercise ahead of the primary election.
